Friday Throughts

A few miscellaneous thoughts from this week.

Store Merchandising

After a few days off I walked into the store this morning to find some of the displays like the photo below. While my personal aesthetic may differ from that of the owner and the people who created this display, I found myself utterly overwhelmed by the look and number of products in my face. I took it upon myself to fix it so that I was 1) unbothered and 2) that the customer could more easily focus on the products available below to purchase.

Below is the photo of my initial changes. If it were my store, I would have a different look all together, but working with the store and owner’s aesthetic, I want to point out a few key changes.

In photography, there is the Rule of Thirds. It exists to help you frame a photo so the focus is drawn to particular areas of the photograph. In a store, similar concepts apply.

You want to focus the customer’s eye and attention on the products, without overwhelming them. Ideally you may have outfits styled on a manekin that are all available in the store, so a customer can see the outfit on. Absent that, you can create color palettes, place items in ways that help you see more of the products (less merchandise, different lengths, sleeves, etc, categories in one section).
